Overview of Renton, WA

Located in King County, Washington the city of Renton is located just southwest of Seattle. It is estimated that the Renton population as of 2006 is approximately 58,360. Of the 522 areas in Washington to be ranked Renton ranked 100th for per capita income. The history of Renton is interesting as it was incorporated in 1901 as a city and the city depended on lumber harvesting and coal mining.  Then the city really began to experience growth during World War II because the B 29 Superfortress was built in a Boeing factory located right in Renton. Even today Boeing still builds aircraft in the factory and approximately 737 are built each year.

 Commercial aircraft are also built in Renton and since 2001 approximately 40% of the commercial aircraft were put together in Renton. Boeing just happens to be Renton’s biggest employer and some other big employers also include Wizards of the Coast, Paccar and Kenworth Truck plant as well. Renton’s claim to fame is that Jimi Hendrix was from there and he was buried there in 1970.

Many new retailers have made a home for themselves in Renton lately thanks to three large freeways that come together in the Renton area. These include SR-167, I-5 and I-405. Some of these retailers include IKEA and Fry’s Electronics.

Renton is located right on Lake Washington’s southern shore and there were 21,708 households as of the 2000 census. This included 12,243 families living in the city of Renton. Of the households in Renton approximately 27% of households had children under the age of 18, almost 41% of the couples were married and living together, practically 11% had no husband present and the woman was head of the house, and the rest of the 43.6% were non families. Household size on average was 2.29 and the family size on average was 2.96.

As far as the city is concerned population was spread out with 10.2% over the age of 65, 20.8% ages 45 to 64,  36.9% aged 25 to 44, 10.2% aged 18 to 24 and 21.8% under the age of 18. Thirty four was the median age range and the ratio of females to males was 100 to 98.9. The ratio was 100 to 96.9 for females and males over the age of 18.

Households in Renton had a median household income of $45,820 and families had a median income of $55,747. Females had a median income of $31,543 while men made $40,765. The city’s per capita income was $24,346. Of the population only 7% of families were considered below the poverty line and 9.7% of the population was considered below the poverty line. This included approximately 8.4% of the individuals over the age of 65 and 13.5% of those under the age of 18.
Overall Renton, Washington is a great place to live.

The weather may get cool during the winter months but the summers are pleasant. People enjoy the weather and lots of new residents are calling Renton home thanks to the many changes taking place to make the area less blue collar and more modern. Its’ working thanks to the new residential developments, shopping centers, and the like. Renton, Washington, really is a great place to live or visit.
